OTHER SOCCER OPPORTUNITIES
Tournaments
The Club encourages all teams to participate in at least one of the many
weekend youth soccer tournaments held around the state. Columbus Day
weekend and Memorial Day weekend are the two main tournament weekends.
See the list of
approved tournaments on the Mass Youth Soccer website.
Camps
Many players attend a soccer camp during school vacation weeks or over
the summer. There are many to choose from, sponsored by local colleges
and other organizations. The Bay Stater, Mass Youth Soccer's
semi-annual publication, contains lots of ads with contacts for more
information.
MAPLE
The Massachusetts Premier League (MAPLE) is comprised of private soccer
clubs which sponsor youth teams at various age groups. Unlike the town
team leagues (such as BAYS), there is no town residency requirement for
MAPLE clubs. MAPLE clubs typically offer a more intensive soccer
experience than the town team leagues, with more scheduled practices,
paid coaching staffs, and more extensive travel. See the
MAPLE website for further
information. Note that it is permissible for a player who is u14 or
younger to play on both a MAPLE and town team at the same time, but
schedule conflicts are not uncommon. Players intending to dual roster
are urged to consult with their town team coach prior to registering.
District Select Program
The district select program is sponsored by Mass Youth Soccer and
provides summer training and competition. Teams are selected and
organized on a regional basis around the state; Brookline is in district
three. More information is on the Mass Youth Soccer website under
District Select Program.
ODP
ODP (originally called the Olympic Development Program) is a program for
elite players sponsored by Mass Youth Soccer. It provides high level
training and competition during the winter, spring, and summer seasons,
and helps to identify a pool of players for potential selection to the
US national teams. More information is on the Mass Youth Soccer website
under
ODP.
A note to players and parents:
Although the Club encourages players to take advantage of other soccer
opportunities, we don't want you to overdo it, either. Children who
participate in multiple sports often develop better as athletes, and are
also less likely to "burn out". And there are many non-sports activities
which provide great benefits. So keep it in perspective, try different
things, and leave some free time for just chilling out.
